Bulldozers have moved in at the site of The Elizabethan to demolish the old pub on North Road, Berwick.
The preparatory work is to make way for the creation of new affordable homes designed specifically for older people in the community.
Not for profit housing provider, Four Housing and construction partner Gentoo secured planning permission to build 16 two-bedroom apartments at the site of The Elizabethan, which has stood empty for three years.
The apartments have been designed with the needs of older people in mind, incorporating a flexible layout and technology for the provision of telecare. When complete, the homes will each have a private balcony and will be accessible by a lift.
Commenting on the project, Dawn Keightley, group director of operations at Four Housing, said: “At Four Housing we’re committed to improving the lives of our customers. For older people it’s important that their home enables them to remain independent and be part of their local community as they grow older and their needs change.
“The demolition of The Elizabethan marks the start of a positive investment in the area. We’re looking forward to watching the project develop over the coming months and then welcoming residents into their new homes next year.”
The investment in The Elizabethan development has been part funded with a grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) totalling £512,000.
The demolition work will take approximately seven weeks and the estimated completion date of the project is early 2015.
