The Former Vicar of Berwick, Canon Alan Hughes, has been extraordinarily extended by The Ministry of Defence for further service to age 70.

Canon Hughes joined the Coldstream Guards 50 years ago and is currently on exercise in the field at the army’s main training area in Salisbury.

He said: “I first trained on Salisbury Plain in 1964, so it’s amazing to still be training there in 2014, as I have done regularly over my 50yrs service.

Canon Hughes is pictured here with Lt Humphrey Bucknall of The Coldstream Guards Regiment, having served with his father, now Honorary Colonel Coldstream, and as Chaplain to his brother Joss, also now serving with The Coldstream, when he was a Cadet at Northumbria University Officer Training Corps.
