Road signs proposal welcomed by council

Photographic signs promoting Berwick could soon be seen on the A1 approaches to the town.

The Department for Transport is currently consulting on changes to traffic signs regulations.

Berwick Town Council and the tourism forum have welcomed the idea.

The aim is to let local authorities promote the historical and geographical qualities associated with particular areas.

Such signs are already commonplace across much of continental Europe, advertising castles, cathedrals and places of interest.

Councillor John Robertson, chairman of the council’s environment and regeneration committee, said: “I think they would be great for attracting more people to our town.”

He suggested they would be best placed a mile or so from the town to give drivers time to decide if they want to visit.
