Poor state of Berwick ‘damaging’ to tourism

A Berwick resident has claimed that visitors will not return to the town because of its dirty and grubby appearance.

Gordon McLean raised concerns with Berwick Town Council’s environment and regeneration committee.

He said: “We are at the peak of the holiday season and the public toilets are an absolute disgrace. At Spittal recently the beach was busy and the toilets were overflowing. The impression that visitors to Spittal had must have been appalling.”

He said it was a recurring complaint - along with grasscutting - on the Berwick Deserves Better forum.

“Berwick Deserves Better has been overwhelmed with comments about this in the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“People come to Berwick to see a beautiful town but leave with a bad impression. It wouldn’t take a lot of money to put it right to the satisfaction of the community.”
