Plans to introduce short stay parking spaces on Berwick’s main shopping street are progressing.
It is planned to create 11 parallel bays on the east side Marygate with drivers permitted to park for a maximum of 30 minutes.
The scheme follows a petition by Berwick Chamber of Trade which received over 300 signatures. It also received the backing of the Portas team.
Northumberland County Council has agreed to a 12 month trial.
It is hoped the spaces will attract more ‘poppers’ - the term for shoppers just picking up a few odds and ends.
A council spokesman said: “The preparation of the Traffic Regulation Order for introducing short-stay parking bays on Marygate will begin towards the end of July.
“We plan to advertise the legal notices on the proposed site from 4 August for three weeks. Subject to there being no objections, we expect the Traffic Regulation Order to be confirmed towards the end of August.”
