The next Wooler Wheel cycle sportive has a new home, with cross-border firm John Swan Ltd offering the auction mart for the ‘Borderlands’ event.
The mart will become the third base in three events for Wooler Cycle Hub, with ever-increasing entry numbers requiring larger and larger administration and start points.
Beth Mills from Wooler Cycle Hub said: “We are anticipating over 1,000 riders taking part on May 17 in the Wooler Wheel Borderlands and associated rides, so the mart will give us the space we need.
“On the day, local firm Brenda’s Kitchen will provide refreshments for riders at the mart and we are aiming to have activities for local people and riders and their friends and family within the mart complex, which is a fantastic resource for us.”
Beth added: “We are delighted that John Swan Ltd offered their support so readily, and it enables us to continue to grow our events, which for the Borderlands means raising more money for disadvantaged children in north Northumberland and the Borders.”
Steven Wilson, managing director of John Swan Ltd, which also has a mart at Newtown St Boswell’s, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the event at our Wooler auction mart for the first time.
“As we have auction marts on both sides of the border the Borderlands theme is very important to us.
“I wish everyone good luck with the event and I am delighted that the very important charity Cash for Kids is benefiting too.”
The Wooler Wheel Borderlands 170 on May 17 is in aid of Bauer Media’s Cash for Kids charity, with the Radio Borders branch benefiting from all profits from the event, and the other Bauer radio stations around the UK receiving any sponsorship raised by riders from their circulation area.
In addition to the full 170km ride, which takes in parts of north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, the organisers are putting on the UK’s first dedicated junior sportive, which covers 30km. Two other routes of 100km and 60km are also available.
