Links between education and the local economy could be strengthened if an ambitious bid by Berwick High School to win specialist status as a business and enterprise college is successful.
It would mean an award of £500,000 over four years invested in better prospects for students, but the scheme would also benefit partner schools.
The school is expected to submit a development plan to demonstrate how it intends to work with its partners.

Fourteen objections have already been received to the controversial plan to carry out open cast coal mining on 72 hectares of land at Wandylaw Moor, near Ellingham.
Work is due to start on a new toilet and shower block at Beadnell.
Assurance was given that what the parish council described as a “grandiose scheme” would receive an £8,000 Sports Council grant because Beadnell has become so popular for water sports.

The frightened seal did not relish the attention, however, and tried to bite anyone who went too near.

A full and fancy dress ball was held at the Cottage Hotel, Wooler, in aid of the funds of the Wooler and District Nursing Association.
The ballroom was tastefully decorated, and, when dancing was in full swing, presented a gay appearance, so everything went on as merry as a marriage bell. Present were Miss Fawcett (good luck), Miss Redpath (fishwife), Miss Preston (national flags), Miss Mavin (charity) and Mrs Raymond (nurse), amongst others.
