The Berwick firm of HB Longbone & Son has lodged a planning application to install solar panels on its Walkergate shop.

It is proposed to install 16 south-east facing matt black panels to match the existing slate roof.

The work would be done by local firm G M Craig.

Berwick Town Council’s planning committee voiced no objections to the plan.

Councillor Alan Turnbull said: “It’s a tricky one because it is within a historic area but they have tried to be as sensitive as possible. From nearby you won’t be able to see the panels but when you step back on to Marygate at the O2 shop and look up you will be able to see them.”

Councillor Tom Forrester felt it would be difficult to put up a strong argument against them when other properties in the conservation area already have solar panels.

A final decision will be made by Northumberland County Council.
