A Prior Park family are still waiting for Four Housing Group to carry out repairs to their home more than two months after it was damaged by fire.

Alan and Lisa Ferrow, who live at Springdale with their two young daughters, say the whole experience has been “absolutely horrendous”.

Alan, a painter and decorator, did a lot of work himself after an electric fire broke out in the stairwell on December 11. But it took Four Housing eight weeks to replace the burnt front door and install a shower. The family are still waiting for soot-stained grouting to be replaced.

Alan explained: “My wife put the shower on, there was an almighty flesh and bang and the fuse box, which Four Housing fitted 18 months ago, was on fire. The fire was at the bottom of the stairs so my wife had to take the kids past it to get them out.”

With smoke damage to most of the house Alan worked tirelessly to clean and redecorate. “I wanted my wife and kids back in their home for Christmas, so I did a lot of the work myself,” he explained. “With the help of friends and family we managed to get back for Christmas.”

But two months on there’s still work to be done. “It’s an absolute joke,” Alan said. “The amount of stress it’s put me and my family under. My seven-year-old has been really affected. People say ‘you were lucky noone was hurt’ in front of her, and you don’t know what a seven-year-old is thinking. The fact the grouting is still black will remind her every day of the fire.”

David Brown, head of asset management at Four Housing, said: “A large amount of work had to be carried out including re-wiring and safely restoring electricity to the property. It was also necessary to replace items in the property due to the extent of the damage.”
