A Berwick councillor has warned that the Greenses harbour could be closed to the public because of its deteriorating condition.
Brian Douglas believes Northumberland County Council could be forced to take action on health and safety grounds.
“It is now becoming a liability to all concerned,” he said. “My worry is that the harbour could be closed and even demolished.”
Councillor Douglas is due to meet officers from the council’s public protection department at the breakwater this week.
Fundraising efforts are already underway, with local fishermen and residents forming a social enterprise group to look at grant funding opportunities.
However, with repair estimates of around £550,000 the group face a tough task.
“It’s a historic part of Berwick and we don’t want to lose it,” said Coun Douglas. “It’s also an important part of our tourist offer given its proximity to Berwick Holiday Centre.”
He hopes Bourne Leisure, owners of the holiday centre, will contribute to the fundraising campaign. The breakwater was built in 1897.
