A farming firm is expanding its reach into north Northumberland by building a new pig breeding facility.

JSR Genetics Ltd, part of the JSR Farming Group, is currently constructing a 200-place boar stud between Wooler and Cornhill.

The state-of-the-art facility will be home to some of the top performing pigs in the country from December, and will become part of the network of strategically placed AI (artificial insemination) studs which supply JSR Genetics customers across the UK.

Using local contractors on the groundworks and the build, the construction of the new unit will also create six new jobs in the area, in stockmanship and also in the laboratory which will be contained within the unit.

Steve Cook, who is the AI Production Manager for JSR Genetics and will also oversee the day-to-day stud operations, said: “JSR Genetics is an established and well-known name in the pig genetics industry, both in the UK and worldwide.

“By creating a base in the Borders, we will be able to better serve our customers in the northern region, while also creating fantastic job opportunities with a company at the forefront of AI technology within the industry.”

The first position to be recruited to is head stockperson, a key role with responsibility for boar welfare on the unit and the supervision of other staff working with the pigs. As the new stud gets up to capacity the other roles will be filled, hopefully by local residents keen to build a career in this lesser-known area of pig production.

The site is on the edge of Flodden Field, where the famous battle was held in 1509 between the English and Scottish. Archaeologists maintained a watching brief during the groundworks phase but no artefacts were uncovered.

JSR Genetics Ltd in partnership with Topigs Norsvin, are now the leading pig genetics company in the UK, marketing breeding stock and semen around the globe.

It is part of the family-owned JSR Farming Group, established in East Yorkshire in 1958.

Through international franchises, the JSR name is globally recognised in the field of pig genetics. Its Genepacker gilt range and the Geneconverter terminal sires remain identifiable the world over.

JSR Genetics’ range of licensed boar studs across the UK provide a fast track to genetic improvement with semen available from the highest merit boars, backed by the reassurance of total bio-security.

It continues to develop a number of highly successful partnerships within the pigmeat supply chain.
