Green waste collection services run by Northumberland County Council have started up again for the 2014 season.

If residents have signed up for the service for the 2014 season, depending on where you live, collections begin this or next week and run until November.

All residents who used the service last year have been sent a letter by the council inviting them to take part again.

The garden waste collections cost £24 for each 240 litre wheeled bin for a fortnightly collection, and extra bins can be rented too.

Anyone who pays for the service online before the end March will be entered into a free prize draw to win one of 10 prizes of £20 worth of vouchers.

Councillor Ian Swithenbank, policy board member responsible for waste management at Northumberland County Council said: “Our recycling rates across the county improve year on year and this initiative is set to continue that trend with the enthusiastic support of the many thousands of keen gardeners who contribute to Northumberland’s green agenda.

“We continue to work hard at increasing the number of properties covered by the scheme each year to assist with this – and this year we can say that the vast majority of homes in South East Northumberland are able to receive the service.

“We have also been able to roll it out to some new rural areas – so I would urge anyone who is interested to get in touch with us – to see if we can collect from their property.”

Through the garden waste service residents can dispose of leaves, grass, hedge and tree cuttings, and similar materials. Woody material must be less than 10cm in diameter.

Last year the service was very successful with 21,300 households using 23,000 bins and nearly 7,200 tonnes of waste collected and made into a rich compost / soil conditioner

Residents are asked not to put green waste in their general waste bins. If you don’t sign up for the garden waste collection service, or don’t live in an area where it is collected, you can take all of your green waste to the nearest local Household Waste Recovery Centre.

Residents wishing to join the garden waste collection scheme should contact the council at ask@northumberland.gov.uk or by phone on 0845 600 6400 to see if their property can be included. If you live in Northumberland you can now call the council on a local number for your area – please see the website for details at www.northumberland.gov.uk

Everyone who signs up for the garden waste service this year will be entered into a monthly draw to have their subscription refunded and the service fee - so the sooner you pay the more draws you’ll be entered into.
