Berwick Conservatives have launched their local election campaign with a pledge to fight every seat in north Northumberland.

As well as five councillors standing for re-election, the party have 12 new candidates hoping to form part of Northumberland County Council after May 2.

Its new candidates include: Steven Purvis, Norham & Islandshire; Tom Forrester, Berwick North; John Stephenson, Berwick West with Ord; Georgina Hill, Berwick East; John Woodman, Bamburgh; Brian Hesler, Rothbury; Bruce Hewison, Alnwick and Peter Robinson, Amble.

Up for re-election are: Anthony Murray, Wooler; Trevor Thorne, Shilbottle; Glen Sanderson, Longhorsley; Jeff Watson, Amble West with Warkworth and Gordon Castle, Alnwick.

Conservative parliamentary candidate Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “We do have some tough fights, but I think our record of working all year round will win through. Our canvassing suggests we can add another three or four seats, but we will see on the day.

“We have seen how unpopular the local Lib Dems are and, after controlling the county council for the last five years, people can see from the crumbling roads how much of a mess they have left the county in.”
