Sir Philip Mawer who will be delivering a talk to Berwick upon Tweed Civic Society entitled "Can Politicians ever be Trusted"

The next meeting of Berwick Civic Society is on Wednesday, June 18 at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre. The speaker will be civil servant Sir Philip Mawer who now lives in Berwick. In a talk mixing humour and seriousness, titled ‘Can Politicians ever be Trusted’ he will suggest some answers to this question.

Sir Philip had been a civil servant for some 18 years, mainly in the Home Office, where his posts included those of Secretary to Lord Scarman’s Inquiry into the Brixton Disturbances and Principal Private Secretary to the then Home Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Douglas Hurd.

Latterly, he was an Under Secretary in the Cabinet secretariat. From 2002-2007 Sir Philip was Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards and from 2008 - 2011 the Prime Minister’s Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests.

All are welcome. Entrance is free to members and £2 for non-members. Refreshments will be available.
