THE Lady Mayoress of Berwick is appealing for brave and hardy souls to take part in the traditional Boxing Day dip.

Anne Robertson is urging local people to take the plunge into the icy north sea at Spittal on December 26 to raise money for the Mayoress’ Charity.

Brave Berwickers have raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years by braving the icy sea, and the Lady Mayoress is hoping that this year will be no exception.

“In the past, the Boxing Day dip has been a great supporter of the Mayoress’ charity, and I hope that there will be lots of brave souls this year too,” she said.

This year, the Mayoress’ charity is supporting Outdoor Learning in local schools.

Mrs Robertson explained: “As a teacher, I know just how important it is for children to spend time outside, where they can learn in a more active, natural way.

“Computers have changed the way children spend their time, and I want to make sure they never lose their love of the outdoors, particularly when we have such a special environment here in Berwick.”

To make sure all children are included, the proceeds from this year’s charity will be divided between the Berwick first schools.
