A nine-year-old boy was taken to hospital after ploughing his family car into a tree.

The incident happened at Haggerston Castle holiday park, near Berwick.

It is not clear how the boy got behind the wheel but he left the Kia car on its roof after it flipped over when it struck the tree.

Stunned onlookers witnessed the freak accident which left the boy trapped inside the vehicle.

He was removed from the car and appears to have only suffered a minor neck injury but was taken to hospital as a precaution.

James Robertson, from Cumbernauld, who witnessed the accident, said: “I heard a bang. It was like an explosion. Then I saw the car overturned and there was a chunk out of the tree. This lad must have hit the throttle full pelt. The staff came running and the paramedics arrived shortly afterwards. The staff are saying he is nine years old and is here with his parents.”

A police spokesman said the boy did not appear to be badly hurt.
