Welcoming back Berwick branch into the Royal British Legion family of Northumberland, county chairman John Rutherford said the organisation was moving towards a time of great change.

At a committee meeting in the Drill Hall, he expressed delight that Berwick had returned with a full team of officials.

Nationally, membership was falling, branches were closing and a struggle lay ahead. But changes aim to turn this around.

An area office for an extended north grouping is to be set up in Newcastle. Welfare officers would be available on the ground and one of the problems to be tackled would be the growing one of combat stress.

One of the ideas being put forward was that every member of the armed forces would also become a member of the legion.

Berwick chairman, the Rev Bob Higham, said a whole range of subjects had been discussed by the branch and he was hopeful of progress being made.

Forthcoming events include Armed Forces Day with a drumhead service at Wallace Green on June 29.

Berwick’s new branch hopes to be involved at the Minden Day parade on August 1 and the Flodden 500 commemoration in September.
