A Belford-based charity is relaunching a vital service that provides the short-term loan of wheelchairs to adults living in north Northumberland.
Bell View has up to 10 wheelchairs available for loan periods of between one day and three months which can, if necessary, be extended.
Manager Paul Harrison said: “Other statutory wheelchair services generally provide wheelchairs to people who have a condition lasting longer than six months that affects their daily mobility.
“However, it’s not uncommon for people to need a wheelchair for a shorter period and this is where our service is able to step in and help.”
Those who are able to benefit include adults with leg fractures, sprains and people with restricted mobility needing a wheelchair for a special event, such as a wedding, weekend away or who come to the area on holiday.
Although this service is free, all Bell View asks is that when wheelchairs are returned in good working order a small donation is made to the charity.
Wheelchairs booked can be picked up free of charge from Bell View Resource Centre on West Street in Belford, or can be delivered to someone’s home for £5 with a further £5 payable to collect when finished with.
Most of the wheelchairs were purchased in 2010 through a grant provided by Ringtons Tea through the Community Foundation, and are regularly inspected, cleaned, maintained and repaired.
To make the service available to a larger number of beneficiaries across Northumberland, Bell View is also seeking other partner organisations.
Bell View has also just launched a scheme to help older people live more independently at home.
