The latest in a series of familiarisation trips to help tourism businesses expand their knowledge of the county comes to Berwick and the north coastal strip on March 25.

Places can be booked via Hexham Tourist Information Centre on 01670 620450 or email Sarah.Davidson@northumberland.gov.uk.

The familiarisation trips have been running since February and have been popular with businesses. Many of the courses so far have been fully booked and the organisers have received positive feedback.

The trips costs just £10 and are aimed at anyone linked to the tourism and leisure industry from attractions and accommodation providers to shopkeepers, taxi drivers or restaurant staff.

Their ultimate aim is to enhance the visitor’s experience while in Northumberland, encourage them to spend more quality time in the county and hopefully make repeat visits.

The initiative is part of the Know your Northumberland programme of courses– a partnership project between Northumberland County Council and Northumberland College.

The accredited courses focus on learning about what’s on in the county as well as the stories, traditions and culture.

Other courses will cover: Kielder, Bellingham and Otterburn - 3 April; Tyne Valley and Hadrian’s Wall Corridor - 29 April; North Pennines - 8 May; Cheviots and uplands, including Wooler - 20 May

Councillor Val Tyler, policy board member for community infrastructure and culture said: “Northumberland is a very large county with a huge amount of things to see and do.

“By offering these trips we are hoping to create a team of ambassadors for the county and help visitors get the most out of their stay.”

Other courses running as part of the scheme include learning about social media and learning how to cook the Northumbrian way.

At the end of the course participants will receive a certificate. Anyone taking up any future courses under the Know Your Northumberland Scheme will receive further awards and certificates which could culminate in a gold award, Know your Northumberland diploma and recognition as an ambassador for Northumberland.
