Work to repair stretches of the A1 will take place this year.

The Department for Transport has advised Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith that works to replace worn carriageway surfaces and kerbs and to renew white lines and road studs is to be carried out at several stretches of the A1 over the remainder of 2014.

Works are due to begin in the Berwick area from September.

Sir Alan said: “I have had regular discussions with Ministers about the ongoing process for getting more stretches of the A1 dualled, but we also need to make sure that the condition of the A1 is not allowed to deteriorate. I am reminding the Minister of the increase in volume of traffic which uses the A1 during the holiday season and hope that this can be taken into account when works are being planned.

“I hope that by having advance notice of these works, at least some of the people who rely on the A1 will be able to adjust their plans if necessary.”

The road works to be carried out are as follows:

Alnwick Bypass – April to May 2014: Works to resurface the carriageway will be carried out under a contraflow. Local diversions will be in place between the Newton on the Moor junction and Alnwick South junction.

Charlton Mires – May to July 2014: Works to replace the worn out carriageway will take place between Rock junction and South Charlton. The work will take place at night time. Speed restrictions and an overtaking ban will be in place during the day.

Morpeth Bypass – May to July 2014: Works to replace worn out carriageway will be carried out under a contraflow between Clifton Interchange and Warreners House Interchange.

Berwick Bypass – September to December: There are three large projects along the bypass to replace worn out carriageway. They include: East Ord to Scremerston, A1 Dins Road to Highfields roundabout and A1 Conundrum to Scottish Border. These works will be carried out under full closures, contraflow and lane restrictions. Local diversions through Berwick will be in operation throughout.

Newton on the Moor Bypass - June to November 2014: Work to renew the kerbs on both sides of the dual carriageway will take place between Shilbottle and Old Felton. These works will be carried out under land closures during the hours of 0600-1600.

There are also a number of smaller schemes to be carried out, as well as gulley cleaning and litter picking.
