Wooler wind turbine set for green light from planners

PLANS to install a 24.5m tall wind turbine on the outkirts of Wooler are being recommended for approval by Northumberland County Council on Tuesday.

The application for a single 11kW Gala turbine at Highburn House has attracted 37 letters of objection, along with concerns from Wooler Parish Council.

Concerns have centred on the turbine’s impact on the national park, residents of Broomey Road and the nearby Humbleton Hill fort. There are also fears it would have a detrimental impact on local tourism.

However, it would also save around 12.9 tonnes of carbon per year.

Planning officer Jennifer Adamson, in a report, states: “The proposed small scale wind turbine would not have a significant impact within the town and area surrounding Wooler.

“It would be visible from some properties on the perimeter of the town and from some areas of open countryside surrounding it but due to its limited height and mass and separation distances it would not be a prominent or dominant feature from these viewpoints or in the landscape generally, including that of the national park. Similarly, with regard to heritage assets, it is not considered the turbine would have a significant impact.

“Although almost 40 letters of objection have been received, several of these are of a standard form.”
