Winters are getting warmer, shows study of national park
A NEW study has discovered that temperatures in Northumberland National Park have increased by more than 0.7°C as a result of winter warming.
Newcastle University student Sam Cawthorne-Kitching has collected information from rain gauges and temperature stations located across Northumberland National Park, together with anecdotes and weather memories from local people.
The overall aim of his research is to better understand how temperature and precipitation levels have varied in this area across time.
The project, which is presently at its half-way stage, was made possible through a grant from the park authority’s Sustainable Development Fund.
Authority member Dr Elizabeth Stockdale said: “To be able to plan for the future, communities and businesses in and around the national park need to know more about the patterns in our weather. For example is intense rainfall really getting more common? And if so can we change the way we build or act to mean that we don’t get overwhelmed by it?
“Sam has already found that temperatures have on average increased by more than 0.7°C as a result of winter warming, particularly in December and February. So although it might not always feel like it, past results indicate that winters are getting warmer.”
