BERWICK and the border towns are the subject of an exhibition showcasing the traditional art of calligraphy.

As a Berwicker with what he describes as “an objective view of his home town”, Arthur Wood feels he offers a unique take on its architecture and people.

“It is a great pleasure to have my work shown at the Watchtower,” he said. “It is a beautiful space and the exhibitions change frequently giving Berwick’s graphic art a much needed shot in the arm.

“Before the Watchtower Gallery was set up, the delivery of art in the town had been very low key. The Watchtower is changing that.

“It’s a great space for the town to have, because there is no charge to get in, and there’s not even a charge to hang your artwork, just a little bit of commission.”

On retirement, Arthur studied calligraphy with Pauline Yell and joined the Border Calligraphers. Since then he has produced three handwritten guide books for Berwick Ramblers.

He also set himself the task of combining drawn and painted images with lettering. The work now on display, he says, shows his progress in this undertaking.

The Watchtower gallery is also showing recent paintings by Cara Lockhart Smith, as well as Grahame Tebbutt’s works inspired by local history such as the Battle of Flodden.

The current exhibition is open now, and runs until February 15. It is open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week, from noon until 4pm.

Arthur’s calligraphy is available to buy in postcard form from the gallery.
