Turbine firm tries to avoid TV signal survey

More wind turbines on the horizon for Berwickshire

A RENEWABLE energy company has applied to change the conditions attached to its controversial wind turbine project at Highburn House in Wooler.

Myriad CEG are attempting to remove a condition that obliges them to carry out a survey of television signals in the area.

The current agreement reads: “No development shall begin until a survey of existing television reception has been undertaken and submitted to the local planning authority.”

Speaking at a meeting of Wooler parish council, Coun Anthony Murray made it clear that judging a turbine’s effect on TV signal depended on a survey of this kind being carried out prior to construction.

“It has to be done before the turbine’s built,” he said, “otherwise, there is no yardstick to measure interference by.”

The parish council voted unanimously to disagree with Myriad CEG’s new proposal.

The proposed turbine already has a tempestuous history. Wooler parish councillors voiced concerns at the development in December, and also received complaints from residents, who urged the matter be taken up with the county planning committee.

Myriad CEG originally made an application for a 24.5m turbine on the Wooler outskirts in June last year.

This brought 37 letters of complaint from residents, concerned at its impact on the nearby National Park and Humbleton Hill fort.

The application was pulled from the December planning committee meeting after English Heritage asked to make a comment on it. It was then approved by the planning and environment committee in January.

The turbine would stand 195m to the west of the main building at Highburn House, on Wooler’s north-western edge.
