Town councillors call for limited Stanks restrictions

BERWICK Town Council has called for proposed parking restrictions next to The Stanks football pitch to be limited to the west side of the street.

Berwick Bowling Club is among those which have voiced strong objections to a proposal to introduce a ‘no waiting at any time’ restriction on what is formally known as Golf Course Road.

The road, which leads from the Cow Port to Magdalene Fields Golf Club, is one of the few areas close to Berwick town centre with unrestricted free parking. As a result, it can become congested at certain times of the day, which led Coun Brian Douglas, member for Berwick North, to propose to fund the work through his small schemes allowance.

He says there have been occasions when parked cars on the narrow road have made it difficult for emergency services to get past.

Six town councillors said they felt the restrictions should only apply to the west (Stanks) side of the road and not on the bowling club side.

Two members supported the original proposal and Coun Jim Smith proposed an alternative for no waiting restrictions between Cow Port and the rose garden gate, and none beyond.

The move to make The Parade an all day car park may also help relive the problem.
