Street route of Olympic torch relay is revealed
THE Olympic torch relay will arrive in Berwick at 4.33pm on Thursday, June 14 and take 37 minutes to parade through the town.
It is then expected to arrive in Bamburgh at 5.58pm before moving on to Alnwick.
The precise timings were revealed by LOCOG on Monday along with names of the torchbearers and the route the iconic Olympic flame will take.
The torch will make the journey from Edinburgh to the central Borders on the morning of June 14 and follow a route east from Gordon, through Greenlaw, Duns, Chirnside and Foulden and onto the England/Scotland border at Mordington.
The convoy will then stop at the Morrisons roundabout in Berwick where the first of eight torchbearers will take it down North Road and Castlegate, through Golden Square and across the Royal Tweed Bridge to Tweedmouth. The torch will then be carried along Prince Edward Road, past the Tweedbank Retail Park and up Sunnyside Bank.
It will then travel to Bamburgh, with the torch parade starting on Radcliffe Road and moving through the village to the main car park beneath the castle and then back through the village along Front Street.
It is scheduled to arrive in Alnwick at 6.50pm prior to an exciting entertainment show where a cauldron will be lit from the Olympic flame at Alnwick Castle. It will depart for Newcastle at 7.28am the next day.
Coun Neil Bradbury, executive member responsible for tourism, leisure and culture at Northumberland County Council, said: “This announcement really brings the route to life and I am delighted that the torch will be coming into contact with so many of our communities.
“The torch relay will be an exciting and memorable spectacle for all our residents – whatever their age – and I am sure our residents will give the torch , and the torchbearers, an especially warm Northumbrian welcome.”
To help residents to get involved, the council has developed a special Olympic website northumberlandin2012.northumberland.gov.uk so that residents can find out all the information they need about celebration events that are taking place around the county in the run up to and during the torch relay. The street level route of the Olympic torch relay, and times the torch will be coming to each community, can also be viewed.
Sebastian Coe, chairman of LOCOG added: “Now the people know the route the Olympic flame will be carried along and the torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Northumberland’s moment to shine.”
