A TEAM effort by a local business and sports clubs in Seahouses has netted £50,000 from Sport England’s Protecting Playing Fields Legacy.

The investment, clinched by Seahouses Junior Football Club and the Seafield Caravan Park, will be used to provide a sports facility for the local community on a field adjacent to the Broad Road which has been secured on a long lease by Seafield Caravan Park.

The Sport England funding will be used to drain and level the land to create a couple of football pitches to suit all age groups.

The Sport England grant will be match funded by the Seafield Caravan Park along with further significant funding towards providing new changing and meeting facilities for players, referees and spectators on land nearby. Currently talks are ongoing to establish the level of grants possibly available for such a facility.

Ken Britton, owner of The Seafield Caravan Park, said: “Securing this investment for the area is an excellent result for the community and comes as great news.

“Seahouses has been without full size multi-use pitches for some number of years and the local football teams have only recently been able to play at Seahouses Middle School, thanks to the very kind permission of the school management.

“It has long been our goal to establish a dedicated pitch for the community to use as its own, whatever their sporting discipline. Such facilities will almost certainly help sporting clubs like Seahouses Junior and Senior Football Clubs progress up the league and give more sports fans the chance to play which, in turn, will keep the clubs going forward.”

Mr Britton added: “We hope this new facility will pave the way for other sports groups to come forward to take advantage of what will be an outstanding facility created out of the 2012 Olympic legacy.”

Coun Pat Scott, who sourced further capital investment funding of £15,000 from her small schemes budget, added: “This really is a win-win situation for the Seahouses community and we are all delighted that this major investment funding has been awarded by Sport England. The funding will be an investment in people of all ages who will be able to use what will be a fantastic community facility.”
