School solar panels help save £66,000

SOLAR panels have now been installed at 89 schools across Northumberland, helping to save an estimated £66,000 per year.

Most schools are using up the majority of the electricity being generated, with any excess being returned to the grid.

Peter Hately, business and change manager at Northumberland County Council, said: “Across the entire portfolio of school installations we estimate annual generation of c550,000 kwh with potential savings based on previous assumptions in the region of £66,000 per annum.

Berwick Academy, The Grove in Tweedmouth and Wooler and Lowick First Schools all have 39 panels, each generating just over 8,000kwh.

Seahouses Middle has 30 panels generating over 6,000kwh, while Berwick and Glendale Middle Schools both have 13 panels generating 2.600kwh. Tweedmouth West First School has eight panels generating 1,600 kwh. Belford First School is to get 29 panels which will generate close to 6,000kwh.

“Almost all schools were considered,” said Mr Hately. “Some schools were not suitable for installation for a number of reasons ranging from poor roof condition, unsuitable roof pitch or through a negative response from development control.”
