Restoration of Greenses harbour bid
Councillor Brian Douglas
A BERWICK councillor is hoping to launch a bid to restore the historic pier at the Greenses harbour in Berwick.
Coun Brian Douglas, member for Berwick North on Northumberland County Council, is aiming to establish ownership of the ailing structure to kickstart the process.
He said: “The Greenses Harbour is in a very poor condition and I am currently searching to establish ownership so that this important feature which is of historic importance can be saved for the community.
“I have asked the Greenses Residents Association to consider becoming involved and likewise Bourne Leisure and local inshore fishermen.
“Currently I am waiting from a response from Berwick Harbour Commission and Northumberland County Council in a bid to regenerate this forgotten piece of Berwick.”
The sea fishermen of the Greenses and their families once lived nearby in Low Greens. The community was actually known as the Greenses Arabs as they were a community of Flemish, Portuguese, French, Spanish and locals. The harbour had been in existence since the 1700’s.
