SPITTAL Improvement Trust is looking for residents to help interpret and present the stories of the community’s people and places over the years.

Volunteers could also guide visitors around the village on occasions such as Heritage Open Days and the Spittal Seaside Festival.

Tour guide and history tutor Derek Sharman has been engaged to lead the project, which is free of charge.

He said: “This is an opportunity for local people to enjoy finding out more about the place where they live and to help them pass on their knowledge and enthusiasm to visitors as well as to their own friends and family members. No previous knowledge of history is required and we want to encourage people of all ages to take part.

“Through these sessions young people can gain useful skills that may help them in future employment in the hospitality or tourism industries and older residents will be very welcome, whether they wish to volunteer as guides or simply share their experiences of life and work in the village.”

A series of sessions and activities will run from mid-March until the end of May. As well as exploring the history of Spittal, its notable characters and sites, there will be opportunities to investigate documents in the Berwick Record Office collection with archivist Linda Bankier and an informal workshop with Wendy Payn, drama tutor at The Maltings, to help develop skills in presenting the stories.

The first meeting will be held at St Paul’s Church Hall, Spittal on Monday, March 18 at 6pm. The session will take an overview of Spittal’s history and share the memories of local residents. The aim is to identify key places and events that can feature on a Spittal tour trail.

The initiative is funded by Northumberland Coast and Lowlands LEADER.
