Police to draft in extra officers for Rangers match

EXTRA police officers will be in Berwick for the upcoming football match against Glasgow Rangers.

Berwick are playing Glasgow Rangers at Shielfield Park on Saturday, February 23, and around 4,200 fans are expected to attend the match.

It is the second time the two teams have met at Berwick this season and the first fixture in August 2012 passed by successfully and without any disorder.

Police will be visible throughout the town, and in and around Shielfield Park, in the lead up to kick off and after full time. They will be carrying out patrols in the town centre, visiting pubs and bars and working with licensees and bar staff to ensure there is no disorder.

Northumbria Police is expecting more traffic in Berwick on the day and would advise people coming to the game to allow extra time to get there and into the ground safely. Etal Road (directly outside the ground) may be closed at the end of the match to enable coaches to pick up Glasgow fans.

Local people are asked to be patient and police are not expecting the football traffic to cause any major issues for local motorists - officers will be on hand to assist with traffic management on the day.

Inspector Dave Garrick said: “We are expecting extra people in the town on match day but we aren’t anticipating any major disruptions for local people. We will have extra officers in the town as a precaution and will welcome travelling fans with a positive and friendly policing style.

“The last time the two teams played was supported in good spirit and the fans really helped to make the day a family friendly occasion. We are hoping the day goes as well as last time.

“We’re not expecting any trouble, but we are prepared for every eventuality and will deal with anyone causing trouble swiftly and firmly. We won’t let a very small minority ruin the day for everyone else.

“We’ve been out speaking to local residents and businesses about what will happen on match day and how it will affect the town and have been working with both clubs and our colleagues at Strathclyde Police to ensure the day passes smoothly.”
