Plans for food heritage art trail gain momentum

DISCUSSIONS are to be held with organisations that have an interest in the sites identified as having potential for inclusion in the initial phase of a food heritage art trail for Berwick.

Representatives from various community organisations discussed the potential for the project at a meeting in Berwick Workspace last week.

The project is one of the elements of the Mouth of the Tweed initiative, which aims to help develop Berwick’s economy through its rich heritage of producing food and drink.

A presentation by Derek Sharman showed how the first phase of the trail can be established quite quickly by incorporating a dozen locations associated with the town’s food heritage where there are existing art-related features. These range from information panels displaying paintings by L S Lowry, Thomas Sword Good and other artists illustrating food-related themes such Dewar’s Lane Granary, “Cockle Cowe’s” shop in Bridge Street and images of the sailing smacks that carried salmon to London.

The plan is to display a code at each location that will enable access by smartphone devices to additional information about the site, its history and associations with the food heritage.

The scheme can be expanded in future to provide links to other food-related attractions and to shops, restaurants, pubs and accommodation providers that offer locally-sourced food and drink. Printed leaflets will be produced to make the trail accessible for those who do not use the new technology.

Before Easter next year, workshop events will be held to design and installing a series of landmark art-pieces at locations around the town where no information or interpretation is displayed currently.
