One-stop service aims to tackle cold homes issues

AS winter bites, a multi-agency approach across three north east council areas is ensuring those vulnerable to the impact of cold are kept safe.

Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle councils have secured government ‘Warm Homes, Healthy People’ funding to continue their North of Tyne Winter Warmth Partnership, a single integrated access point.

It provides those at risk with help to tackle cold homes and a focused approach with the voluntary and community sector to ensure everyone at risk gets the advice and support they need.

The telephone helpline (0191) 643 2807 and the ability to text for information and support on 80800 will mean anyone in the whole North of Tyne area has a one-stop service for help.

This year it is widening access to ‘early warning’ technology, such as Telecare temperature sensors, to ensure people don’t put themselves at risk.

Coun Tom Brechany, an executive member on Northumberland County Council said: “This is about preventing our most vulnerable people from becoming ill or experiencing reductions in wellbeing as a result of cold living conditions.

“Cold homes can lead to ill health and in some cases death. We’re aware that in these economic times and with rising fuel prices it can be difficult to make sure homes are warm but help is available to keep costs down.”
