Northumberland housing needs revealed until 2023

MORE than 200 new affordable homes will be needed in Northumberland every year for the next 10 years.

The results of the first county wide housing needs study for Northumberland, which were published last week, show that Northumberland needs a minimum of 242 new affordable homes every year for the next 10 years to tackle housing need.

It is proposed that this will be a mixture of social rented housing and intermediate housing, such as shared ownership.

Councillor Tom Brechany, executive member responsible for housing at Northumberland County Council, said: “The information contained within the report has strengthened the council’s understanding of the nature and influence of the housing market and sub-markets across the county, and will provide council staff and other stakeholders with valuable insight into the housing needs and demands across Northumberland.”

Over 19,000 residents across Northumberland took part in the survey, which took place between January and February last year.

Secondary data such as house price information, private rent levels and housing supply and availability was also used.

The data gathered will also be used to develop further reports at a lower geographical levels to help with decisions on housing delivery, and to support neighbourhood planning.
