WINDOW and door specialist Allan Brothers has made nine new hardwood planters for Berwick town centre to mark the Diamond Jubilee and the arrival of the Olympic torch.

It is all part of longer-term plans by Berwick Town Council to improve floral displays throughout the town. The square planters have been put in Marygate and replace the tiered black planters which have been relocated at the suggestion of a resident to the railway station car park.

Made over a period of several weeks by craftsman Peter McAskill, assisted and supported by colleagues, the planters are crafted from sapele, a hardwood which will fade to a silvery grey over time.

They are being stocked and maintained by the local county NEAT team, which works in partnership with the town council to ensure a yearly improvement in floral displays throughout Berwick, Spittal and Tweedmouth.

Danny Hughes, Allan Brothers managing director, said: “Allan Brothers have been working in Berwick since 1811, and it has given us all great pleasure to gift these planters to our home town, especially as their arrival marks two very special events in 2012.

“Although not part of our mainstream work of windows and doors, these planters have used craftsman skills which we are pleased residents and visitors can see and enjoy.”

Mayor John Robertson added: “This has been a generous and timely gift from Allan Brothers to Berwick and we have been delighted that these magnificent planters have been made locally, showing just what highly skilled people we have here in Berwick.

“These will be a great asset, both in summer and winter, and enable us to show our town centre with pride, especially to the thousands who will be following the progress of the Olympic torch.”

The town council has also asked for help in identifying the worst benches so they can be repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
