New plans submitted for former Blackburn and Price garage

REVISED plans for the former Blackburn and Price site in Berwick have been lodged because the developer believes its current permission for flats is not financially viable.

Lindisfarne Homes has permission for 16 apartments on the former garage showroom site on Silver Street but instead wants to build eight houses there.

In the new application, consultants Queensberry Design, state: “Lindisfarne Homes Ltd have identified that the approved design comprising 16 apartments fronting Palace Street East is not financially viable and are seeking to gain planning permission for this section of the development to be changed to self contained dwelling houses.”

Lindisfarne Homes originally secured planning permission to redevelop the site in 2006, subsequently revised in 2010.

The proposed development comprises 43 town houses and apartments and an office within new and converted buildings, with provision for affordable flats.

Queensberry Design add: “The developers met with council officers on November 30 and discussed the principle of the application to amend the original approval. This was considered and no objections were raised subject to further details being provided.

“The revised development seeks to maintain the key tenets of the approved design within the streetscape in terms of massing, materials and the reinstatement of the frontage to Palace Street East and as such has no detrimental impact on the private external amenity area.”

The site was occupied by the Border Brewery until the 1940s but was purchased by Blackburn and Price in 1948 to sell and service cars. It created or converted several buildings to make them more suitable for a car dealership.

A decision will be taken by Northumberland County Council.
