New call made for tourism signs

A LOCAL councillor is making a fresh bid for new signage promoting Berwick to be installed on the A1 approaches to the town.

Councillor Jim Smith, member for Berwick East on Northumberland County Council, has been pushing for improved signage on the route for several years to encourage passing motorists to stop in the town.

Speaking at Berwick Town Council’s events committee last week, he said: “We need to get some brown tourist signs sign-posting Berwick from the A1.

“At the moment, on the northbound approach the first sign directs traffic to Scremerston and the second to Spittal and yet just off the A1 we’ve got new signs saying ‘Welcome to the Walled Town of Berwick-upon-Tweed’.”
