National award for high-flying glider
A MEMBER of Borders Gliding Club at Milfield has won a coveted national trophy for his high-flying efforts over the Cheviots last summer.
Andrew Bardgett, who lives in Bamburgh, has been awarded the prestigious De Havilland Trophy, which is handed out annually by the British Gliding Association to whichever pilot achieves the “greatest height gain” on a single glider flight within the UK.
On August 18 last year, Mr Bardgett soared to a height of 7.1km (4.4miles) above Wooler, using “mountain lee waves” from the Cheviots to create the lift.
He said: “I had my oxygen mask on all the time I was above 10,000ft and, although it was -25C outside my cockpit, the brilliant sunshine kept me warm inside, even though I was only wearing a light polo shirt – but my feet were like blocks of ice. The view from 23,000 ft was stunning – I could see all the way from the Tay estuary to the North Yorkshire Moors.”
