Museum and art gallery future in 'cultural heritage trust'

CONSULTANTS have recommended that Berwick Borough Museum and Art Gallery's long term future lies in the hands of a 'cultural heritage trust'.

That is the result of a consultation process carried out by DJB Consulting, the recommendations from which were presented to a meeting of the Culture and Heritage Sector Board of Berwick Borough Local Strategic Partnership.

Darren Barker of DJB Consulting told the meeting: "Change is absolutely necessary. Berwick is a place that should be recognised as internationally significant."

He recommended that the cultural heritage trust be proposed to the council as the way forward in the long term and that this would not just include the museum, but other significant heritage in and around Berwick. He believes such a trust would provide stability in the future and would be run by local people.

Mr Barker added: "People see the Barracks as a pivotal regeneration project for Berwick and the museum is a key part of that."

In the short term a working group is going to be set up which will involve representatives from a small number of groups with a vested interest in the museum, and this group will drive forward with the recommendations set out in the report, which will be published in around a fortnight.

It was also suggested at the meeting that a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund be made to try and secure a grant to allow a conservation management plan to be undertaken at the museum. This would look at the significance of exhibits and their long term future amongst other things.

Mr Barker's colleague, John Thompson told the meeting: "This report is not just a blueprint for grants, but a blueprint for the future of the museum."
