Language scheme goes further to help children

A NEW company is being launched to extend language tuition for children through a Polish Saturday School in Berwick.

The new enterprise, ‘Mohr Language Support’, will provide English as Additional Language (EAL) support to children and young people from a migrant background, most of them living in Berwick.

It is being launched tomorrow (Friday, March 1) at a ceremony in Berwick’s Guildhall, to be attended by Sir Alan Beith MP and the Civic Party, as well as the Polish Consul.

The service, which provides individual tuition in English as an Additional Language, has been working with pupils in a number of schools in Berwick, Alnwick and Blyth.

In addition a Saturday Polish School based at the Sure Start premises in Tweedmouth keeps children from Polish families in touch with their mother tongue and culture by means of lessons and fun-filled activities.

Thanks to grants from a number of sources, including Northumberland County Council and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, these services are set to expand to assist children from Russian-speaking backgrounds.

The service is led by Dr Beata Kohlbek, who studied languages at the universities of Düsseldorf and Glasgow.

The new funding will allow for continuous language support for young people over a number of years. All schools are welcome to contact the service, especially if they have new arrivals who do not speak English.

Mohr Language Support currently employs two EAL tutors, two Polish teachers and a teaching assistant.

The Board of Directors is made up of four consultants who aim to help the new company to grow into a sustainable not-for-profit organisation.
