Knitters needed for museum’s new exhibition

THE RNLI Grace Darling Museum in Bamburgh is looking for knitters who would like to join in with their next exhibition, Keeping Warm, which will run from December 18 until January 6.
The interactive exhibition will showcase a collection of ganseys from the Moray Firth Gansey Project. A ‘gansey’ is a distinctive, seamless, woollen pullover, traditionally worn by seamen and fishermen. It was also standard clothing for RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew.
Many early fishing communities are thought to have had their own distinctive patterns. Wearers’ initials or the name of a boat were sometimes incorporated into a design and if a man was lost at sea, this might have helped identify him. The Moray Firth Gansey Project was set up to help conserve gansey patterns and to keep the skill of creating the knitwear alive.
The RNLI Grace Darling Museum is looking for knitters who are interested in volunteering during the exhibition period.
Virginia Mayes-Wright, museum manager, said: “We’re inviting people to bring along their knitting needles, to have some fun and to help us to teach our visitors how to knit a gansey. Volunteers will be rewarded with tea and biscuits and they need only pop-in for a couple of hours. No previous gansey experience is necessary as we’ll provide the knitting patterns. It’ll be the perfect antidote to Christmas shopping!”
