Huge banquet to kickstart Berwick Food Festival

This year's Berwick Food Festival will see the launch of two new events.

For the first time, the Slow Food Taste Adventure will be available to all children visiting the festival, while an Eve of Festival Supper, on Friday, September 10, will launch a series of seasonal meals open to all.

Designed to teach younger foodies to take time to think about taste, the taste adventure was launched earlier this year by Slow Food UK with support from The Grain Chain.

At the festival, local residents Livvy Cawthorn and Maxine Roake and volunteers from SureStart will take children aged four to 10 on a journey through five sense zones - the seeing zone, touchy zone, noisy zone, tasty zone and the smelly zone.

Taste adventurers are given a passport – complete with fun food cartoon characters – and invited to collect stamps as they explore, interact and discover new flavour.

Graham Head, leader of Berwick Slow Food, said: "We hope from the very young to very old there will be something for each and every member of the family at this year's festival.

"We are delighted that the taste adventure will be coming to Berwick. It very much showcases the ethos of Slow Food in action – a dedication to promoting the greater enjoyment of food through a better understanding of its taste, quality and production."

He added: "As part of an ongoing project, the public festivities will start the first offour 'Eat Locally, Eat Seasonally' meals tobe run at different venues throughout the year.

"Each meal will be open to both Slow Food members and the public and the aim is to promotethe wonderful range of produce that is available to us locally throughout the year and to raise awareness of Slow Food and its activities. But first and foremost we aim to make them fun occasions that everyone will enjoy."

The Eve of Festival Supper will take place in the marquee on the Parade Green which will also be home to the beer festival over the weekend.

Featuring produce from a selection of the festival stallholders, on the menu created by DM Catering is locally smoked salmon, Lindisfarne crab, organic poultry, artisan cheese, beers and ciders.

All the producers featured on the menu will be attending the food festival that weekend, so diners will have a chance to follow up on anything that particularly grabs their taste buds by looking in on the festival.

The Berwick Food Festival takes place in the Barracks Square on September 11 and 12.
