A BID for lottery funding that could pave the way for a £1.8m project on Holy Island and the surrounding area has been submitted.

The Peregrini Lindisfarne project received a first round pass of almost £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund in the summer of 2011 and has been developing its action plan since then.

The project aims to protect and enhance Holy Island and surrounding areas by reconnecting the community’s relationship with the land and seascapes, heritage and history, making the area a better place to work, live and visit.

Jon Riley, project manager, said: “The board feels that this is a fantastic project that will bring many benefits to Holy Island and the surrounding areas. We would like to thank everyone who has given their input to the development phase; this has undoubtedly made for a powerful action plan.”

The application to the Heritage Lottery Fund had been delayed to allow the partnership board to review its proposed action plan and incorporate changes.

Following the consultation events held in Belford, Holy Island and Berwick in November, together with the questionnaire survey carried out in December, the board has decided to remove two projects - the dune grazing and brent geese schemes.

These changes necessitated seeking advice from Heritage Lottery Fund and a considered revision of the overall action plan.

The funding decision is due in July. If successful, work would be likely to start in earnest in early 2014.

Throughout the spring and summer the board will continue to work to prepare year one projects such as work at the harbour, the Old Lifeboat House and the community archive.

Work will also continue on seeking further funding.
