THE Berwick father who organised an 11,000 strong petition to get the A1 dualled after the death of his son on the road last year has had his achievement recognised at the highest level.

Alex Gibson named the petition Project Alexander, after his son, also named Alexander, who died in a crash that could have been prevented.

Last week he was rewarded for his persistent campaigning with a meeting in Whitehall, centre of government decision making.

Alexander, senior, described his day in London, accompanied by his grandchildren: “From Downing Street I went to the Ministry of Transport to speak to Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport.

“He said he’d look into the A1 situation, and try and get up to have a look for himself, so, fingers crossed.”

Alexander continued: “On a personal note I want to thank ‘The Berwick Advertiser’ for helping me set up Project Alexander.

“I would also like to thank my family and friends, all the cafes, garages, shops, and pubs who helped me collect signatures, the north Northumberland public and all the visitors who signed as well.

“You’ve all been tremendous. I would like to thank Sir Alan Beith for arranging to get myself and my family through the gates at Downing Street and making the appointment with the Transport Secretary.”

Alexander wanted to remind people not to let the issue drop.

“Readers,” he urged, “keep getting your family and friends to sign the e-petition online (http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38183) to put more pressure on the government. If we get to 100,000 it has to go to for discussion in the House of Commons.”
