THE stained glass windows in memory of Grace Darling at her burial place in Bamburgh have been rededicated in a special service.

The Archdeacon of Lindisfarne, the Venerable Peter Robinson, visited St Aidan’s church in Bamburgh to bless four decorative windows in the chancel as well as the Grace Darling window, in front of a small congregation.

The rededication was part of the church’s restoration programme, and also forms part of the preparations for the approaching 175th anniversary of the Forfarshire disaster.

When the steamship SS Forfarshire was stranded on Harker Rocks, off the Farne Isands, Grace helped her lighthouse-keeper father to rescue nine survivors.

She helped her father steer their four-man fishing boat almost a mile around their island, in order to avoid the worst of the storm, and then kept it in place while he picked the stricken survivors off the rocks.

She found herself a Victorian heroine virtually overnight, even appearing on boxes of Cadbury’s chocolate.

St Aidan’s also houses an effigy of Grace Darling, over one hundred years old, that was brought into the church after suffering storm damage in the 1880s.
