THE Glendale Gateway Trust has appointed two internationally-known experts to give them advice on rural issues and philanthropy.

Mark Shucksmith is Professor of Planning at Newcastle University, specialising in rural communities, and Jo Andrews, a former senior correspondent at ITN, is director of Ariadne, the European Human Rights Funders network. Both have accepted invitations to become the trust’s first honorary ‘specialist advisors’.

Jo has worked extensively as a consultant supporting new philanthropists, and for four years was director of the Sigrid Rausing Trust. She founded the Ariadne Network in 2009 to increase the impact and effectiveness of human rights funding in Europe. At ITN she worked in London, Brussels and Washington during the ‘80s and ‘90s, covering the Monica Lewinsky affair and seven UK general elections.

Jo’s grandmother helped run the Wooler post office during the war, her mother was brought up in Wooler, and Jo herself now has a self-catering business in Kilham.

Prof Shucksmith has provided advice to governments and agencies in several countries on rural development, social exclusion in rural areas and agricultural change. He was a member of the Government’s Affordable Rural Housing Commission, and directed the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s programme on ‘action in rural areas’. He is currently director of the Newcastle Institute for Social Renewal. He was awarded the OBE in 2009 for services to rural development and crofting.

“We are delighted to have two such distinguished experts ready and willing to give us the benefit of their vast experience”, said Patsy Healey, trust chair. “We operate in very challenging economic times, and their advice over the next few years will be invaluable to us as we strive to do more for the Glendale community.”
