Funding secured to help keep homes warm vulnerable and disabled people

OLDER, vulnerable and disabled Four Housing Group tenants in Berwick are to get help to keep their homes warm.

Not for profit housing association Four Housing Group has received funding from the Foundations Independent Living Trust (FILT) to help residents in Northumberland with winter warmth measures, including boiler services and the fitting of draught excluders and radiator foils.

The Department of Health has granted FILT funding from its Warm Homes Healthy People programme, which was set up to enable the Home Improvement Agency (HIA) sector to achieve the objectives of the department’s Cold Weather Plan.

The aim of the plan is to protect the health of vulnerable people and reduce the harm caused by severe cold.

The winter warmth measures will be carried out in homes across the region by Four Housing Group’s care and repair service. This includes handymen and specialist contractors who will be delivering the home improvements.

Philippa Hughes, interim head of care and repair at Four Housing Group, said: “Our care and repair service plays an essential role in safeguarding vulnerable people from the challenges of independent living, and we are delighted that we have received FILT funding to support this.

“As well as investing thousands of pounds into implementing winter warmth measures, which are vital during the coldest months of the year, our care and repair service is active all year round making large and small scale repairs and adaptations to the properties of people who are old, disabled or otherwise vulnerable.”
