Funders make visit to see Royal Border Bridge illuminations
ONE of the major funders of Berwick’s spectacular Royal Border Bridge lights visited the scheme last week - and declared his great satisfaction with the investment.
Andy Savage, executive director of the Railway Heritage Trust which provided a substantial private sector grant towards the installation costs, visited the historic bridge and was given a demonstration of the lighting’s abilities.
Mr Savage said: “The Railway Heritage Trust was delighted to sponsor the illumination of Stephenson’s Royal Border Bridge and it was a real pleasure to see the lighting in action, and how the viaduct can be lit up in so many different ways.
“I congratulate all those involved in delivering this project, and hope that it will make both Berwick and Tweedmouth more attractive to visitors, and so help the local economy.”
Bernard Shaw of Berwick Cittaslow said: “We were very pleased to be able to welcome one of the major grant funders for the lights and to express our gratitude to Andy in person for the Railway Heritage Trust’s generous support. Our thanks have also been passed on to the chairman of the RHT, Sir William McAlpine.
“The illumination is one of three legacies of the Stephenson 150 project which attracted nearly 14,000 participants and attendees, many from outside Berwick, to 26 different events commemorating Robert Stephenson and his finest work, the Royal Border Bridge. We are now in discussions with interested parties to use the lights to attract more visitors to the town.”
John Robertson of the Tweedmouth West End Residents’ Association added: “We are pleased with the bridge lights, in particular we were delighted with the red, white and blue display during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and most appreciative of the poppy red display on the evening of Remembrance Sunday. We think the lights are beautiful.”
