Free parking petition hits 1,400 names

A PETITION calling for fairer parking charges in Berwick has attracted 1,400 signatures so far.

But Berwick Chamber of Trade want many more local residents to put their name to the petition before the February 26 deadline.

John Haswell, chairman, said: “We’re pleased with the level of support the petition has received. It shows the strength of feeling about parking charges here in Berwick.

“However, there are still lots of people who haven’t yet put their names to the petition and we need them to do so if we are going to put pressure on Northumberland County Council to change its current policy.”

Currently, visitors to Berwick, Alnwick, Morpeth and Hexham have to pay parking charges, while areas like Blyth, Ashington and Cramlington pay nothing.

After the petition closes, a public meeting of the Northumberland County Council’s petitions committee will be held to discuss the findings. The idea already has the support of the Labour group.

Petitions can be found in the Advertiser front office, Boots, Harrisons newsagent, the Cannon Fish Restaurant, Castlegate Fish Restaurant, the Holiday Rock Shop, Fairbairn the butchers, Ladbrokes, Ace Convenience in Bridge Street and both Berwick dental practices.
