FARNE Islands head warden David Steel has revealed the final count for the grey seals breeding season is 1,603 - an increase on last season but not as big as the record numbers reported in other colonies.

A breakdown of the figures shows that 463 pups were born on Staple Island, 373 on Brownsman, 380 on South Wamses and 279 on North Wamses. Donna Nook in Lincolnshire recorded 1,525 pups, while Blakeney Point in Norfolk recorded 1,220.

David, who looks after the Farnes for the National Trust, said: “Overall it’s a very healthy picture and now we’ll have plenty to consider over the forthcoming weeks and months. We still await news from the Scottish colonies, but without doubt, its top of the pups for the Farne Islands. The islands have experienced another noticeable increase in the population. This mirrors the pattern shown in other east coast colonies.”
